LIFE EXPECTANCY PER GEO-POLITICAL ZONES IN NIGERIA-DATABOD

According to the released Statistical Report on Men and Women in Nigeria for 2017, the average life expectancy in Nigeria is 49 years. Based on this report, Nigerian women have a longer life expectancy of 51 years while men are expected to live for just 47 years. This is a drastic reduction from the previous year, 2016, where the life expectancy was estimated to be 55.5 years for men and 57.2 years for women.

Presently, Nigeria has a World Life Expectancy ranking of 178 out of 192 ranked countries. A Nigerian male born in 2018 is expected to live approximately 54.7 years in good health, while a female will live a healthy life of approximately 55.7 years. The average life expectancy at birth in Nigeria is 55.2 years.

Available data shows that Nigerians are more liable to die from sickness and diseases than from any other cause. This is reflective of a problem in the prevailing health and environmental conditions within the country. It is also a pointer to the inaccessibility of good healthcare to the average citizen of the country.

Surprisingly, influenza and pneumonia are the leading causes of death in Nigeria. Other identified causes include tuberculosis, diarrhoeal diseases, stroke, HIV/AIDS, coronary heart disease, liver disease, prostate cancer, diabetes mellitus, maternal conditions, malaria, breast cancer, meningitis, cervical cancer, lung disease and low birth weight. Some other common causes include road traffic accidents, birth trauma, injuries and falls.

Cross River state has the longest life expectancy in Nigeria with residents expected to live up to 54 years. Following suit are Ekiti, Imo and Ogun state, whose residents are expected to have a life expectancy of no more than 53 years. Generally, the Southern part of Nigeria has a higher age expectancy than Northern Nigeria.

Adamawa and Borno state recorded the least life expectancy ages with 43 years. This was followed by Yobe state with 44 years and Bauchi and Kaduna state with 45 years.
